Vacation was nice, but I am oddly glad to be back. One more three-day weekend upcoming for the New Years holiday and I’ll be back to my normal routine.
While I was off I spent a goodly amount of time in the dungeon finder. I did this mostly at the level cap, but a few on my lower level characters as well. I find that I really enjoy it. More so than I thought I would actually. I picked up the paitient title on my priest, as well as getting my very own pug dog. I even managed to heal my way to 4/5 tier 9 already.
Sometimes I will run as a Dps, usually I will heal. It depends on my mood. I like being able to choose the role I wish to fill and hit the random button to see what happens. There is only one thing.
I can’t fill them all.
Well, I suppose I could. I just don’t want to be the guy that signs up as a tank and then can’t do the job.
Well, you say, if I have a max level Death knight why not just grab a few crafted blues and que up?
Once again, I don’t want to be that guy that signs up and can’t do the job.
I leveled my Death Knight solo for the most part, and once she made it to 80 she pretty much got parked in Dalaran making me money with her Inscription and Jewelcrafting skills. Essentially she was a glorified banker alt. About a week ago I started to get the itch to break her out and try my hand at tanking.
Now I could just gear her up with crafted and BoE gear and go start tanking things. In fact, that is a goodly portion of the plan. I already bought dual talent specs and set myself up with a frost tanking build as my second spec.
The next thing I needed was a gear plan.
There are two ways to go about this. I can either instance my way through normal runs as a tank, or Dps my way through Heroics collecting badges and (if I’m lucky) a few drops along the way.
Personally I am leaning towards Dpsing my way through for a while, as I learn the pulls from a melee standpoint. I will do that to the point that I have me a stack of emblems built up. Once I get there i’ll up grab some guildies (because guildies rock), throw on my gear, and give tanking a go.
If I like it and I buy me a bunch of badge gear to fill in whatever spots I never saw a drop for and keep right on rolling. I don’t like it and I buy me a bunch of heirloom gear with the emblems. Either way I come out ahead.
As I said, I need a plan.
A plan that includes only things that can be crafted (regardless of cost), things that can be bought with either emblems or cash, or things that drop in 5 man instances. Might I get really lucky and get a nice shiny while doing the weekly raid quest? Sure. I won’t count on it though.
I am also leaving out the gear from Emblems of Frost, since I will be gathering at most 19 per week. By the time I gathered 50 or 60 to get something I would likely be fully outfitted already. Who knows, maybe I’ll splurge and pick up something later.
What I will need to buy and how I will gem and enchant it will depend on what drops for me along the way. If I bought a set of badge bracers and a Titansteel destroyer, and never saw a single drop to fit another spot, I could fill out with badge gear.
That would cost me a whopping 507 Emblems of Triumph if I went the badge bought tier 9 route, and a jaw dropping 612 if I decided to go for the tier 9.5. Thats a whole lot of instancing.

OMG, I’m in love…. Quel’Delar, Ferocity of the Scorned
Edited in the Lightborn Spire in the two hander catagory. Somehow I missed it on the first pass through.
My advice would be skip the titansteel destroyer and use the blue sword that you get from Ebon Blade rep (it was good enough for me dpsing in heroics until I got a better drop).
Good luck with it, I’m enjoying my DK a lot.
Found your post on the wonderful folks who ninja’d you out of HToC and then started reading. I’m in the process of doing the same thing on my DK.
One point I’ll make – keep an eye out for Rep gear as well. You’d be surprised how quickly you can hit exalted with a toon running a ton of Heroics.
